Stretching is great pre and post-workout as it helps relieve tension, improve flexibility and can even boost your mood. While stretching can be done alone, doing it with a partner is even better. Partner stretching allows two people to work through stretches together to increase their range of motion and flexibility, while helping to decrease the chances of injuries. Partner stretching can also help you and your partner become more in tune with one another during your workouts.

Not only is stretching good for your physical health, but studies also show that couples who exercise together are more satisfied with their relationships. Whether you’ve been in a relationship for years or are just looking to get fit in the new year with your bestie, here are a few stretches you can incorporate into your fitness routine

1. Butterfly Pulls

For this stretch, start seated in a butterfly position facing one another. Then, reach for each other’s hands and have your partner pull you forward. Slowly pull your chest to your feet while pushing your knees toward the ground. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds, slowly release, then switch. This stretch shouldn’t cause any pain or discomfort, so don’t force your knees to touch the ground if you can’t do so comfortably. To ensure you’re comfortable in this stretch and others, make sure you’re wearing proper workout leggings that allow you to reach a full range of motion.

2. Hamstring Stretch

Hamstring stretches are great movements for increased flexibility and range of motion and are great post-workout. For this stretch, lie on your back with your legs straight. Lift one leg up in the air while your partner holds onto it. Gently have them push your leg forward until you feel a good stretch. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds, then switch legs.

3. Quad Stretch

Quad stretches are a great movement post leg day. Begin this stretch by laying on your stomach while bending one knee. As you bend, bring your foot to your glutes. Have your partner put one hand on your lower back and place the other hand under the knee that’s bent. Then, have your partner pull your knee up until you feel a gentle stretch. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then switch.
